Thai Language Short Course

Introduction

The Thai Language short course is a non-degree course at the Institute of Foreign Languages at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. It has been developed especially for selected students already studying at RUPP across all departments.

The need for Thai speakers in Cambodia is increasing with growing investment, the expansion of Cambodia’s tourism industry and the expansion of the Thai-Cambodian relationship. The need for Thai speakers will continue in the foreseeable future. Students possessing Thai Language skills are able to apply for various jobs within the Thai public and private sector.

RUPP’s Thai language course consists of four levels: Level 1, for beginners studying the Thai basic course; Level 2, the Thai Pre-intermediate course; Level 3, the Thai intermediate course; and Level 4, the Thai intermediate course 2. Each level consists of 36 weeks and 180 hours.

Background

The Thai Language Course was established in September 2005 by the Thailand International Development Cooporation Agency, under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to promote Thai Language education in Cambodia. At present, the course has 52 students, and the department has prepared for more.

Admission

First year students from all departments of the Royal University of Phnom Penh, as well as some applicants from outside RUPP, are selected by interview in early September each year. Students who want to study the Thai Language Course must apply to the IFL Registration office before the interview. The fee for each level is $35 a year. This covers textbooks and other materials for the class.

Assessment

Assessment is based upon class attendance, class participation, assignments, mid-terms and final examinations. Students who fail a level or grade are not promoted to the next level, but may be able to retake the course the following year. Students who want to receive a certificate must pass the examination at the end of each level.
