Introduction
The Chinese Language Specialty cultivates students to achieve the ability of proficient spoken and writing Chinese language, of abundant knowledge about Chinese language, literature, culture and society. Graduates are prepared for the exchange and communication work in the culture and economy with China and are able to take up advanced study in these areas as well.
Both the basic and the specialty course are set according to the Chinese national demand for the specialty. The credit curriculum is desired for the international Chinese requirement, especially for the Southeast Asia in its three training aspects: Chinese education, economic and trade, and tourism management.
Graduates who achieve the required credits in the prescriptive time are awarded the diploma and the Bachelor's degree by Dali University and the Royal University of Phnom Penh.
Cultivating Purpose
The Chinese Language Specialty aims at training students to achieve the ability for Chinese language application in the various areas where Chinese language is demanded, including :
Obtaining proficient spoken and writing ability, being able to undertake translation job.
Possessing fundamental specialty knowledge, comprehending the situation and the culture of China, obtaining knowledge about the society of China, and being able to do any exchange work especially in culture, economy and tourism area.
Acquiring the ability of teaching Chinese and commanding good learning method and being able to further increase Chinese fluency.
Reaching the HSK (National Proficiency Chinese Language Test) with an advanced 6 level.
Being able to operate computers in Chinese and holding the method of searching literature, data and other related information with Chinese.
Length of Education
The standard length of education is 4 years. Students who can achieve required credits are qualified to apply for the degree within 4 to 6 years.
Background
Chinese –language education was first introduced to the Royal University of Phnom Penh by DHY Centre on 12th Dec, 2007. Initially, a non-degree course was offered to any student of RUPP who wished to learn Chinese. In 2007, 50 students started taking Chinese courses. In accordance, the Royal University of Phnom Penh formally established a Department of Chinese, which was officially recognized by the Ministry of Education on April 2010. 70 Bachelor-degree students were recruited on Oct 2010. In addition, the university allowed the DHY Centre to continue providing non-degree Chinese language courses.
Admission
All applicants wishing to study in the Department of Chinese must undergo a two-stage application process.
Hold a High School Certificate or a qualification deemed equivalent by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS), with at least an overall E grade. Alternatively, they must have a B.A. or an associate degree in any field.
Pass a 90-minute Chinese entrance examination administered by IFL’s Admissions Committee.
After the two-stage application process, students select a study shift (morning, afternoon, or evening) when submitting their applications. Once chosen, this shift cannot be changed.
Diploma and Degree Awarding
Students who have earned his or her status as a formal student of Dali University and cooperative university, have achieved the cultivating purpose, have passed all the courses and meet all the requirements, and who has not been punished because of disobeying the regulations, can be awarded with the diploma and the bachelor degree of Chinese Language Specialty according to the Prescript of Degree Awarding of Dali University and cooperative university.
Assessment
During the four years of their degree, students in the Department of Chinese are constantly assessed on the basis of class participation, homework, and assignments, as well as in-class revision tests. Students also conduct a formal examination at the end of each semester. The percentages of all the assessments criteria vary among subjects and lectures. For each subject, class participation and homework account for 5%, assignments 15%, quizzes 30%, and mid-term and final examinations 50%. All four-year students have to complete a research assignment and write a thesis. At the end of the first semester of their fourth year, students are required to submit a thesis proposal. If accepted, they will continue to research and write a paper.
Mode
To Provide student's choice of study, the Chinese program offers 3 modes as follows:
Mode 1: 2+2 (2 years at RUPP and 2 years at Dali University)
Mode 2: 3+1 (3 years at RUPP and 1 year at Dali University).
Mode 3: 4+0 (4 years at RUPP)
