Introduction

Students of the Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy will fulfil the requirement within four years. The study will explore the world philosophical thoughts – from both Western and Eastern philosophies. It is to equip students with knowledge of philosophy that deals with diverse basic themes, which will provide students who have entered the challenging realm of higher learning with reflexive knowledge, accurate critical reasoning and analysis in many fields of study like Economics, Logics, Law, Religion, Politics, Arts and Science, and so on. All these subjects will entail students of both theoretical and practical aspects, with understanding and appreciation of the values and role of philosophy in life and society in which they live, as well as enabling the graduates to pursue careers as philosophy teachers, journalists, and works in/with business companies, various ministries and non-government organization (NGOs).

Background

The Philosophy Department was established in year 1981, with objectives to build human values and characters, and the society in need of intellectual foundations of Philosophy. It is to help promote human resources for the country’s development. Since then on, the department has been developing alongside similar project of neighbouring ASEAN nations – with the help of New Humanity, Italy, from 1996 to 2000. Over the years, our staffs have received extensive trainings from overseas professors from various institutions including New Humanity and the Catholic University of Milan (Italy), Hong Kong University (Hong Kong), Sydney University (Australia), and Ateneo de Manila University (the Philippines). The Department is currently seeking technical and financial assistance to conduct further research into Cambodian Philosophy.

Mission-vision

The department of philosophy has a mission to carry out academic teachings of philosophy to students as well as the Cambodian general public in order to enable them to understand the meanings, values and importance of philosophy. The department has its primary vision as its main social goal to build human values and characters, and the society in which they live. The contribution that the department has made is to uplift the Cambodia intellectual development through the teachings of and researches into philosophies – as a way to enable students to reflect on the evolutions of the Khmer society as well as the world and the worldviews from one generation to another, so that they can be able to live on a par with the others in the globalization era. In 2016 Master of Arts in Philosophy was established within the support from Maryknoll Cambodia and Jesuit Service Cambodia to provide Master in Philosophy program. Now is the second year of the first batch in academic year 2017-2018.
